contemporary poetry

the darkness rolls upward
out of me unworthy and unknown
long has the summer sunlight shone
one by one, like leaves from a tree
i saw him once before
there are three ways in which men take
a thousand silent years ago
stand here by my side
when, full of warm and eager love
here falls no light
sweet splendor
and how could you dream of meeting
