birthday poem

i saw the first pear
when the wind works against us in the dark
though love repine, and reason chafe
there are three ways in which men take
now while my lips are living
the earth keeps some vibration going
and as we walked the grass was faintly stirred
sad are they who know not love
this ancient silver bowl of mine
to what shall a woman liken her beloved
the lightning flashed, and lifted
