thanksgiving poem

that strange companion came on shuffling feet
if the red slayer think he slays
sun and wind and beat of sea
the shadows of the ships
made up of loveliness alone
i stand in the cold gray weather
and breaketh bread no more
suddenly, out of dark and leafy ways
they ask me where i've been
days endeared to every muse
mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam
birds against the april wind
