birthday poem

those black eyes i once so praised
god
the sky
there is a city, builded by no hand
in the cloud-gray mornings
in and of itself
very well, you liberals
daughters of time
rocked in the cradle of the deep
against the green flame of the hawthorn-tree
in your flight
old wine to drink
