birthday poem

i loathed you
when i was a boy at college
just now
at midnight
among the smoke and fog of a december afternoon
a mile behind
do you think, my boy, when i put my arms around you
stern cold man
beautiful
pushing out, struggling vainly
soft as the bed in the earth
