poem for dad

when a deed is done for freedom
he speaks not well
dark-eyed
made up of loveliness alone
sadly speaking
up and down he goes
little gate was reached at last
do you remember
against the green flame of the hawthorn-tree
darkest, strangest mystery
had he and i but met
