happy birthday poem

shadows lay along broadway
among the smoke and fog of a december afternoon
if i had known how narrow a prison is love
i shake my hair in the wind of morning
perhaps
which keeps
tell me not
looking beyond
the darkness
and as we walked the grass was faintly stirred
