free poem

shadows lay along broadway
when the veil from the eyes is lifted
happiness
since i have felt the sense of death
as a naked man i go
a gleam of gold in gloom and gray
they in the darkness gather and ask
a mist was driving down
the darkness steals the forms of all the queens
from our hidden places
out of me unworthy and unknown
have you seen walking through the village
under dusky laurel leaf
one by one, like leaves from a tree
