death poem

stern cold man
candles toppling sideways in tomato cans
i've won the race
tell me
afraid no more, i say
by the shore, by the sea
night is dark, and the winter winds
pushing out, struggling vainly
i loathed you
these be
i saw the archangels in my apple-tree last night
