autumn poem

in your flight
she heard the children playing in the sun
in their ragged regimentals
the darkness rolls upward
that strange companion came on shuffling feet
often is it not so?
when a deed is done for freedom
the snow whispers about me
looking beyond
in and of itself
in new york harbor
as evening falls
