life poem

i am dying
the poets tell
earth travails
therefore i may not
a mile behind
you are beautiful and faded
and breaketh bread no more
beautiful, tragical faces
could we but know
long ago, in the young moonlight
a mist was driving down
i know not where
and with the humming bird
up to her chamber window
