short poem

there was never a sound beside the wood but one
beneath my window in a city street
desolate and lone
and still they walked on
have you seen walking through the village
not from the whole wide world
suddenly, out of dark and leafy ways
candles toppling sideways in tomato cans
were it not for that singular smell
i said
along a river-side
