birthday poem

as i lie roofed in, screened in
in september
desolate and lone
from floor to ceiling
the lightning flashed, and lifted
the little pitiful, worn, laughing faces
softly weeping
i am singing to you
in their ragged regimentals
the sun is up
i shake my hair in the wind of morning
