friendship poems

i can not tell you now
gaily through the fields we danced
look out upon the stars, my love
among the smoke and fog of a december afternoon
i know what you're going to say
royal feast was done
when night drifts along the streets of the city
a poet, having taken the bridle off his tongue
let me move slowly through the street
within this lowly grave a conqueror lies
under the harvest moon
doubtless i remember still
there were three in the meadow by the brook
a storm is riding on the tide
