poem for dad

with joy and wonder
two rows of cabbages
earth travails
she said
you are clear
evidenced in the glimmer in your eyes
here falls no light
among the mountains i wandered
what was it the engines said
under a spreading chestnut tree
when the wind works against us in the dark
