autumn poem

have you heard
once this soft turf
we were not many
at dawn, he said
a bird sang
white foam flower, red flame flower
the lightning flashed, and lifted
along a river-side
do the boys and girls still go
the child who threw away leaf after leaf
now for a brisk and cheerful fight
afraid no more, i say
