retirement poem

from song and dream for ever gone
along a river-side
at midnight
my soul is a dark ploughed field
along the banks
with joy and wonder
see i give myself to you
i said, i have shut my heart
still thirteen years
you say you love me
there was never a sound beside the wood but one
when the wind works against us in the dark
when the veil from the eyes is lifted
and as we walked the grass was faintly stirred
