cowboy poetry

desolate and lone
gone before us
we were not many
see the tentative
a pen of steel
i hold your heart
afraid no more, i say
at dawn, he said
how like the stars are these white, nameless faces
in an old chamber softly lit
the air is like a butterfly
rocked in the cradle of the deep
and still they walked on
beautiful
