mom poem

are you alive?
by the rude bridge
all down the years
in mournful numbers
her face is fair and smooth and fine
i saw him once before
in and of itself
love me at last, or if you will not
tell me less or tell me more
listen
under dusky laurel leaf
over the river they beckon to me
