child poem

three years ago today
arched the flood
this is the arsenal
daughters of time
love has been sung a thousand ways
in mournful numbers
but i cannot read you now
when i returned at sunset
pushing out, struggling vainly
long ago, in the young moonlight
in your flight
when i was a boy at college
who loves the rain
you say you love me
