short poem

i have known the silence of the stars and of the sea
a bird sang
when sea-winds pierced our solitudes
awful truths these be
darkest, strangest mystery
the sun is up
i loved a woman
the saddest of the year
it was many and many a year ago
at dawn, he said
o fair and stately maid, whose eyes
the single clenched fist lifted and ready
she was a beauty in the days
