anniversary poem

when a deed is done for freedom
passing through huddled and ugly walls
soft as the bed in the earth

now that i have cooled to you
be patient, life, when love is at the gate
her face is fair and smooth and fine
she limps with halting painful pace
pushing out, struggling vainly
they in the darkness gather and ask
sadly speaking
